What is probably the country's only girl scout troop organized exclusively for girls of Cambodian heritage is looking for new members.
At the beginning of each meeting of Girl Scout Troop number 971, the seven or so troopers kneel on a circle of Oriental carpets and bow before the large Buddha at the end of the room in the Bra Buddha Ransi Temple at 6th and Ritner Streets.
The temple's CEO and Venerable, Monk Muni Ratana, started the troop with a temple member last fall:
"We believe that Girl Scouts can improve the girl to be strong and also to have their own life."
Sixteen-year-old Emily Siv lives in Oaklyn, New Jersey.
"I've learned a lot of new stuff about my culture. It's pretty cool."
The troop wants to enlarge and is seeking more members from all communities. For more info, call 215-564-2030.
